Shallow and irregularly shaped earthwork pits were visible on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived from lidar data of 1998 to 2014 on the summit of a west-facing ridge, north of Witness Moor, Payhembury parish. The pits extended over an area of over 2 hectares, immediately south of the point where the boundaries of Broadhembury, Awliscombe and Payhembury parishes meet. The visible earthworks might be a continuation of gravel extraction pits recorded to the north of the track that defines the parish boundary, in Broadhembury. The majority of the earthworks are poorly defined and have been transcribed using extent of feature symbology.
More earthworks of similar character were recorded extending to the east in Awliscombe parish, recorded separately.
The earthworks are not depicted the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, which might support the interpretation that the any extractive activity had ceased prior to the mid-19th century.
The pits are largely obscured by dense woodland on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010 but are likely to survive as earthworks.
