Numerous curvilinear banks and ditches of varying width are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken from the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
They do not correspond with any field boundaries depicted on the historic mapping available to the survey, although alignments of trees depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map support their interpretation as grown out hedgerow planting. Their curvilinear forms are broadly in keeping with the layout of the field pattern surrounding the parkland, which is variously characterised by HLC as enclosures based on medieval strip fields, medieval enclosure or Barton Fields.
The relict banks and ditches are interpreted as the remains of field boundaries of medieval origin that became disused by the mid-19th century, possibly cleared for the emparkment at Hembury Fort House.
