Narrow ridges were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. The visible earthwork banks were spaced up to circa 7 metres apart and crossed the contours of the slope over an area of circa 0.2 hectares.
The visible earthworks fall within plot 696 on the Tithe Map for Payhembury, listed as Higher Orchard on the Tithe Apportionments. The plot remains largely depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, a small area to the north incorporated into a plantation or copse.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage in orchards dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century. The plot remains under light orchard tree cover on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010.
