Summary

The remains of ridges made for tree planting and improved drainage probably of post-medieval to mid-19th century date were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on on digital images derived from lidar data acquired from 1998 to 2014 to the east of Peradon Farm, Clyst Hydon parish.

Plot 405 is listed as Great Orchard, for Peradon Farm.

The visible earthworks fall within a plot depicted as an orchard.

The remains of parallel ridges circa 5 metres apart were visible as low earthwork banks over an area of circa 1.2ha on digital images derived from lidar data acquired from 1998 to 2014. The visible banks fell within Plot 405 on the Tithe map and apportionments for Clyst Hydon, listed as Great Orchard. It remained depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map and was densely planted on aerial photographs of 1946.
The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage, dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century that remain in use into the second half of the 20th century.
The orchard remains moderately planted on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010 but appears less closely managed.
