Narrow, shallow and roughly parallel curvilinear ditches were visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as subtle earthworks over nearly 0.5 hectares of gentle south-west facing slopes west of Tale House, Payhembury parish.
The ditches are tentatively interpreted as the gutters of a possible catch meadow irrigation system. Catch meadows were popular in the 19th century but many continued in use into the mid-20th century. The gutters did not appear to have been recently used or maintained in 1946 and the system was probably out of use, the main gutters possibly operating as part of a later drainage system: regular linear ditches continue to the north and west and have not been recorded as part of this monument. Elements of the possible gutters were identifiable as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data acquired from 1998 to 2014.
