Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

An irregularly shaped pit over 90 metres long and nearly 45 metres wide was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks correspond with a roughly rectilinear sub-plot within plot 837 on the Tithe map for Payhembury, possibly that listed as coppice on the apportionments. A small pond was depicted on the OS First Edition 25 inch map to the south-west end of the pit.
This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of an extractive pit of probable post-medieval date that pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century and was subsequently partly reused as a pond.
The pond is one of several in this area that has been recorded as part of record MDV113536.
