Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

Plot 716 is listed as Pit Close under Farrants Farm estate, cultivation, pasture. Plot 717 is listed as Hollows Pit under Farrants Farm estate, cultivation, underwood. Farrants Farm is probably a misreading of Tarrants Farm.

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthwork is not depicted but falls within plots 616 and 617, and a dashed area is depicted in the latter.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthwork does not correspond with any depicted pit but matches a plot depicted as woodland.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST0601 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

An irregularly shaped pit was visible as a shallow earthwork.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

An irregularly shaped pit circa 95 metres by 65 metres in size was visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks fall within plot 716 and 717 on the Tithe map for Payhembury, listed as Pit Close and Hollows Pit respectively on the apportionments. The pit is not explicitly depicted as such on the OS First Edition 25 inch map, but the earthwork matches a plot depicted as woodland containing a small pond.
This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of an extractive pit of probable post-medieval date that pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century and was subsequently partly reused as a pond.
A second pond was added in the 20th century and the ponds are recorded separately as record MDV113583.
This pit was obscured from view by dense tree cover on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards.
