A teardrop shaped pits up to circa 90 metres across was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1982 onwards and digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010 and lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the 19th century mapping available to the survey, but did fall within a plot, Plot 541, named as Higher Pit Park on the Tithe Apportionment for Payhembury. This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of an extractive that pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century.
