Summary

The possible remains of a small area of ridging made for tree planting and improved drainage probably of post-medieval to mid-19th century date were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, immediately to the east of Middle Woodbeer Farm, Plymtree parish.

Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

Plot 180 is listed as Higher Orchard.

The plot is depicted as an orchard.

The plot had been cleared of trees and the banks were identifiable as earthworksr.

Parallel banks were visible as very slight earthworks.

The possible remains of parallel ridges spaced circa 4 to 5 metres apart were visible as low earthwork banks in a plot to the east of Middle Woodbeer Farm, Plymtree parish, on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible banks cover a small area of less than 0.1 ha, falling within a plot listed on the Tithe Apportionments for Plymtree as an Higher Orchard. The plot remained depicted as an orchard on the OS First Edition map but was cleared of trees in the first half of the 20th century.
