Summary

Field boundaries of between medieval to 19th century date are visible as a series of earthwork banks and a cutting on aerial photographs of 1948 and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the northwest of Farthings, Yarcombe. The field boundaries had probably passed out of use prior to the late 19th century.

Field boundaries of between medieval to 19th century date are visible as a series of earthwork banks and a cutting on aerial photographs of 1948 and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the northwest of Farthings, Yarcombe. The linear field boundaries are typically northwest to southeast and northeast to southwest aligned. A number of the banks adjacent to the former farmstead of Farthings form a series of small infields or enclosures, possibly utilised as orchards or stock pens, one of which enclosures a triangular shaped cutting adjacent to a now removed field boundary. The earthwork banks do not correspond with any field boundaries in this location on the available 19th century mapping. This supports the interpretation that the field boundaries had passed out of use prior to the late 19th century. The Parish Tithe map is un-surveyed here, so it is not possible to determine whether the field boundaries were extant by this time.
