HER Number:MDV118867
Name:Medieval fields at the head of the Redwater Valley

Summary

Traces of medieval fields at the head of the Redwater valley. Two field banks are visible curving north-west to south-east and forming a possible moor lane, to the north of which is an undisturbed area containing three possible lynchets. Much evidence has been destroyed by later post-medieval tinworking, leaving these remains isolated but it is likely this field was part of a larger system incorporating fields on the east and west sides of the valley.

(10/07/2001) [1344315] Traces of medieval fields at the head of the Redwater valley. Two field banks are visible curving north-west to south-east and forming a possible moor lane, to the north of which is an undisturbed area containing three possible lynchets. Much evidence has been destroyed by later post-medieval tinworking, leaving these remains isolated but it is likely this field was part of a larger system incorporating fields on the east (SX 68 SE 328 ) and west (SX 68 SE 338) sides of the valley.
Two pillow mounds from the later Headland Warren (SX 68 SE 339) have been constructed in the field.

Historic England, 2017, National Heritage List for England, 1021340 (National Heritage List for England). SDV359963.

During the Medieval period much of Headland Warren was enclosed by a series of fields many of which would have been associated with the farmstead at NGR SX 68488076. The farmstead includes at least two longhouses and associated enclosures.
