A former post-medieval to 19th century extractive pit which has been later utilised sometime by the 19th century as an orchard are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014, to the west of Whitemoor Farm, Hemyock. The extractive pit is irregular in shape and measures approximately 47m in length by 36m in width. The earthworks are located within plot 58 on the digital Tithe Map and Apportionment of between 1838-48 and is recorded as ‘Pit Orchard’, which suggests the extractive pit had passed out of use by this time and the redundant earthwork instead utilised as an orchard. A series of linear northeast to southwest aligned banks within the former extractive pit is likely evidence of this re-use, the fruit trees being established on the banks for increased soil depth and improved drainage. The orchard banks are not visible on aerial photographs after 1947 and their present day survival is uncertain, whilst the former extractive pit is visible on lidar images.
