HER Number:MDV119335
Name:Possible chalk pits east of Selah, Chardstock parish

Summary

An area of shallow circular and irregularly shaped earthwork pits was visible on digital images derived from lidar data of 1998 to 2014 on the south-east facing slopes east of Selah, Chardstock parish. The pits are probably the remains of chalk pits, probably of post-medieval date.

Numerous shallow depressions or pits were visible on digital images derived from lidar data as roughly circular or irregularly shaped earthworks between 20 and 30 metres in diameter, extending over an area of at nearly 5 hectares of irregular ground. Few individual earthwork pits were confidently definable, the earthworks probably having been denuded by ploughing. For this reason the extent of the earthworks has been depicted in the transcriptions as an extent of area polygon; the pits may extend further east but this area was obscured by dense tree cover. Towards the northern edge of the area of irregular pits a large rectilinear or rhomboidal shallow pit circa 130 by 100 metres in size (circa 1.1ha) was visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs of 2000 and as a slight earthwork on the lidar derived images. The pits are located in an area of chalk geology and are therefore interpreted as probably evidence of open cast chalk extraction, probably of post-medieval date.
