Former extractive pits of possible post-medieval to mid-19th century date are visible as a series of earthworks on aerial photographs of 1948 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014, to the southeast of Higher Heazle Farm, Clayhidon. The earthworks comprise a large irregular shaped pit which measures approximately 185m in length by 100m in with, with two smaller irregular shaped pits to the south which both measure approximately 48m in length. Field name evidence here on the 1838-48 Parish Tithe Map and Apportionment include ’Pit Close’ (549), ‘Great Orchard’ (539), ‘Copse’ (540) and ‘Orchard’ (532). A number of ponds, as well as orchards and a copse are also depicted in this location on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pits had passed out of use by the mid to late-19th century. A small area of northeast to southwest aligned earthwork banks of a possible former orchard within the largest of the three pits was also recorded, although were only partly visible on aerial photographs of 1948.
