Two irregularly shaped pits up to circa 40 and 20 metres across were visible as shallow earthworks on aerial photographs of 1947, either side of a track on the eastern edge of Burridge Common, Chardstock parish.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any extractive features depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey. The pits are therefore interpreted as the remains of extractive pits, probably sandstone pits of post-medieval to 19th century date that had passed out of use by the late-19th century.
The larger pit is obscured by vegetation on later images. The smaller pit has probably been levelled during the creation of access into the field to the east.
