Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Shown on 19th century map as a row of three circular features with sluices shown as 'Sl' on their western sides.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

Three circular features shown on early 20th century map with sluices shown as 'Sl' on the west side of each.

Smith , J. R. + Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, 1996, Shaugh Bridge China-Clay Works: An Archaeological Evaluation, Sites 35-44, 11 + survey (Report - Evaluation). SDV360309.

Sites 35,36 and 37: A set of three settling pits on a granite masonry fronted plinth up to 1.5 metres high. The three granite pits are 16 metres in diameter by 2.5 metres deep. Pit (Site 35) has the remains of a button-hole launder beside the sluice and has been modified by the addition of a 0.6 metre high concrete block wall around the top edge. Pit (Site 37) has the timber uprights for the sluice control still in situ.
Sites 38,39 and 40: Three sluices allowed each settling pit to be emptied or 'landed' to the tanks below.
Site 41: Around the tops of the settling pits are a series of shallow channels circa 0.1 metres deep which were probably intended to collect and divert rainwater away from the pits.
Site 42: A wooden launder to the east of the pits appears to have been the means for the distribution of the clay into the pits.
Site 43: A connecting channel 0.7 metres deep to channels to the north-west.
Site 44: To the west of the two southern settling pits are two brick-lined sumps 1.2 metres deep which give access to a pipe run at their base. This may be the only currently visible evidence for clear water disposal from the settling pits.

Ordnance Survey, 2017, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV359962.

Three circular features shown on modern mapping.
