Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Kiln shown as a long narrow building on 19th century map at 'Shaugh Works (Brick)'.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

Long narrow structure shown on early 20th century map.

Fletcher, M., 2000, The Ferro Ceramic Mine and Shaugh Brickworks, Meavy, 3, 6-7, Figure 3 (Report - Survey). SDV360342.

The principal surviving structure at the Shaugh Brickworks is the roofless remains of the tunnel brick kiln (I). It comprises two parallel mortared granite walls 1.2 metres wide and standing up to 1.7 metres at the northern end. The kiln is now 50.4 metres long although there is evidence that it was originally 62 metres long. A bulge on the eastern side may represent the position of the furnace. Three pairs of vertical slots mark the location of vertical doors which were later modified. To the east of the kiln is 6 metre wide strip of levelled ground (M) with a possible trackbed of a tramway (P) further to the east.

Ordnance Survey, 2017, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV359962.

Structure shown on modern mapping.
