Lysons states that the courtenay family had a castle at chulmleigh in 1253, of which there was now (1822) no trace. Os suggest above site, a ridge west of chulmleigh church, as the most probable site for this. Vis=12/7/1993 (simpson) the area indicated as being the most probable location of the castle by the os at the above ngr is now part of a golf course (rchm, citing simpson).
