Extensive traces of cultivation marks similar to straight, narrow ridge and furrow are visible on aerial photographs (p1) and were digitally plotted as part of the National Mapping Programme. For the most part the traces survive as low ridges but in the east some are visible only as crop marks. The features extend from SX46880 88593 in the west to SX48710 89118 in the east. The features lie within areas classed as rough ground showing signs of earlier use as agricultural land, medieval enclosures, and enclosures based on strip fields in the Historic Landscape Characterisation for Devon.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2017-2018, Backlog recording of the Winkleigh National Mapping Programme Survey (Personal Comment). SDV360588.

The cultivation marks mentioned elsewhere within this record likely refer to the 19th-20th century practice of the mechanical ploughing of ground for the improvement of drainage and areas of rough ground. This monument record has accordingly been indexed as narrow ridge and furrow.
