The visible earthworks do not correspond with any depicted pits.

Pits are visible as subtle earthworks.

Irregularly shaped pits up to circa 24 metres across were visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1947 on the south-west facing slopes west of Ridge Hill Farm, Chardstock Parish.
The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pits depicted on the 19th century mapping available to the survey. This might support the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of an extractive that pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century.
The location of the pits is obscured by scrub vegetation on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014. The pits might therefore survive as earthworks.
