Land parcel 488 is recorded as Great Orchard.

Traces of parallel ridging are visible as low earthworks on aerial photographs (p1) to the north-west of Higher Chilton. These features are potentially the remains of medieval ridge and furrow and were digitally plotted during the National Mapping Programme. The features are sited within an area described as rough ground in the Historic Landscape Characterisation for Devon.

The earthworks interpreted as medieval ridge and furrow in this record by Young & Turner more likely represents evidence of a former orchard. Land parcel 488 is recorded as Great Orchard on the Parish Tithe Apportionment and part of an orchard is shown in this location on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map.
