A series of linear earthwork banks, circa 4m in width, is visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, on a limestone plateau at Kiln Orchard, Ipplepen. The earthworks occupy an area of approximately 3.8 hectares, are typically northwest to southeast and east to west aligned and define a number of rectilinear shaped enclosures, from between 25 to 130m in length. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any linear features shown in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, nor are they in keeping with the layout of the surrounding historic field patterns largely characterised as medieval enclosures based on strips. Their form, character and setting support the interpretation that they more likely represent relict field boundaries of a possible prehistoric or Romano-British field system, a number of which have been recorded in the vicinity on the limestone plateaux to the north and west.
