A curvilinear ditch is visible as an earthwork under pasture on aerial photographs of 1946 and images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, on the south-west facing combe slopes to the north-east of Deer Leap Farm, Higher Ashton. The visible earthwork is up to 5 metres wide and 70 metres long, defining an enclosure adjacent to the southern bank of the France Brook approximately 38 metres by 28 metres in size.
It is possible that the earthwork is simply a paleochannel or evidence of post-medieval drainage. However, the visible earthwork is interpreted as evidence of a former field boundary defining an enclosure in keeping with the character of the surrounding field pattern, as depicted on the Tithe Map for Ashton. This field pattern, comprising small subdivided fields, has been characterised as derived from medieval enclosure based on strip fields.
