Name:Possible road, Two Mile Oak, Abbotskerswell

Summary

Earthworks of ditches and a bank interpreted as evidence of a medieval or post-medieval road, and possible earlier route of the A381, are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2013, at Two Mile Oak, Abbotskerswell. The A381 is recorded as the possible course of a Roman road, so an earlier date of this section of road is also possible.

Earthworks of ditches and a bank, between 10-20m wide, are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2013, at Two Mile Oak, Abbotskerswell. The two sections of ditch form part of a single linear northeast to southwest aligned feature, 310m in length, which has been bisected by a field boundary of possible post-medieval date. A short section of bank is visible flanking the western side of the ditch. The character and form of the earthworks support the interpretation that they represent evidence of a former medieval or post-medieval trackway or road which possibly defines an earlier section of the A381 which it intersects with at its southern extent. The A381 has been recorded as a possible extension of the Roman Exeter to Teignbridge road (MDV118358), so an earlier date of this section of road cannot be discounted.
