The remains of parallel earthwork ridges were visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1964, on the slopes of a west-facing combe to the west of Ruggadon, Chudleigh.
The closely spaced banks, measuring circa 5 metres wide, cross the contours of the combe. The banks are visible within a larger plot (457) listed as Lower Orchard on the Tithe map and apportionments for Chudleigh, They survive as earthworks only to the south of the stream that bisects the plot.
The visible earthworks are interpreted as banks made to enhance drainage and provide additional depth of soil within the orchard and were probably made prior to 1840. An early 19th century date is probable but it is possible they are earlier in origin.
They remain visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data captured in 2013.
