Summary

Thought to pre-date the turnpike era (pre-1750 in date), inscribed with 'W3', it is said to indicate 3 miles from Widecombe. Very worn stone in exposed position close to road edge. Chunks out of top edge.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

'Stone' is depicted on the late 19th century historic map.


Jenkinson, T., 2007, Miscellaneous Milestones and Boundary Markers of Dartmoor Roads, 08/02/2007 (Report - Survey). SDV361800.

Milestone on bank close to road edge under gorse bush on Sherberton Common some 400 metres south-west of Locks Gate Cross (south side of road). (SX69019 73706). Legend ‘W3’. Very worn stone in exposed position. Chunks out of top edge. According to George Thurlow the crudely cut inscription signifies 3 miles from Widecombe. Easily pre-dates the Turnpike era. Dated to around c.1750.
