Two oval shaped pits, between 11m to 18m long, with possible bank are visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, at Daracombe Beacon, Highweek, Newton Abbot. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the available 19th century mapping, although a circular copse labelled as ‘Daracombe Beacon’ (MDV68007) is shown to the immediate west on the First Edition Ordnance Survey Map of the late 19th century and which is also visible as an earthwork on lidar images. The two earthwork pits are interpreted as evidence of possible post-medieval or 19th century quarrying, with associated spoil, which had passed out of use by the late 19th century. Earthworks labelled as ‘Old Quarry’ recorded to the north on this map offers some support to this. The relationship, however, between these possible quarries and the earthworks associated with Daracombe Beacon is, however, uncertain.
