Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.

Parallel earthwork ridges, circa 5m wide, are visible on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in 2010 and from lidar data captured in 2013, at Hill Farm, Ilsington. The visible banks are closely spaced and are aligned across the contours of the northwest facing slopes, occupying an area of approximately 0.30 hectares. The banks coincide with land parcel 271 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map and recorded as ‘Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. Orchards are also shown in this location on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of the late 19th century. This supports the interpretation the earthworks represent possible post-medieval or 19th century tree planting banks of this orchard, the fruit trees being established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage. The orchard is covered with trees on aerial imagery taken between 1946-9, although by 2010 only a few trees remain visible.
