Earthworks of an irregularly shaped pit, circa 365m long by 105m wide, with small adjacent oval shaped pit, circa 25m long by 15m wide, are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2017, within Butland’s Plantation, Teigngrace. Woodland labelled as ‘Butland’s Plantation’ and an earthwork labelled as ‘Old Quarry’ are shown in this location on the late 19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map. The earthworks are interpreted as evidence of large-scale post-medieval or early 19th century quarrying for possible clay extraction which had likely passed out of use when the area was given over to woodland by the mid to late 19th century. The earthwork is not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover.
