Parallel earthwork ridges were visible under moderate tree cover on aerial photographs of 1930, over circa 0.3 hectares of a plot to the north-west of Conduit Square, in Chudleigh village. The closely spaced banks are on average 4 metres wide and are aligned cross-contour. They are interpreted as banks made to enhance drainage and provide additional depth of soil within an orchard.
The plot in which the banks are visible is depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25-inch First Edition map, one of many in the burgage plots of Chudleigh at this time. The banks were therefore probably created prior to circa 1880. The orchard had been cleared of tees and banks probably levelled by the 1940s.
The former burgage plots have been developed for housing and public services.
