Summary

A series of linear earthworks interpreted as tree planting banks of a 19th century orchard which passed out of use during the latter 20th century is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, to the west of Dunley Plantation, Hennock.

Parallel earthwork ridges, circa 6m wide, are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, to the west of Dunley Plantation, Hennock. The visible banks are closely spaced and are aligned across the contours of the gentle southeast facing combe slope, occupying an area of approximately 0.50 hectares. The banks coincide with an orchard depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map and remains moderately planted in 1946. The presence of an orchard in this location supports the interpretation the earthworks represent possible 19th century tree planting banks, the fruit trees being established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage. The plot has been completely cleared of trees on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken between 1999-2000.
