Two earthwork pits, irregularly shaped and up to circa 62 metres in extent, are visible in a single field on aerial photographs taken between 1946 and 1969. They are interpreted as post-medieval extractive pits, perhaps limestone quarries given the nearby limekilns and quarries depicted on the late-19th century maps (including Caton Quarry MDV60874). The plot is named ‘Greater Pitland’, and under arable cultivation in the tithe apportionment, indicating that extraction ceased prior to the mid-19th century. The area has been impacted by road construction in the later 20th century, and earthworks have been removed or levelled.
