Irregularly shaped pits are visible on aerial photographs of 1946 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 as earthworks to either side of the road, south-east of Teignmouth Golf Club, Bishopsteignton
The visible earthworks north of the road correspond in part with pits depicted as ‘Old Quarries’ on the Ordnance Survey 25in First Edition map and ‘Old Gravel Pits’ on the Ordnance Survey 25in Second Edition map. The pits visible on aerial photography and lidar derived images most closely match pits depicted on the 1930s Fourth Edition map, north and south of the road.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as former extractive pits, probably gravel pits of probable 19th century origin, that passed out of use in the late 19th century and returned to use into the early to mid-20th century.
The pits north of the road have been incorporated into Teignmouth Golf Club. Some, to the south-west of the group, remain visible as earthworks under grass while the north-east the pits have been levelled for golf course landscaping. South of the road the pits are obscured from view by dense tree cover.
The pits were not transcribed as part of the survey.

Ordnance Survey, 2019, MasterMap 2019 (Cartographic). SDV362729.

Pits are schematically depicted.
