Full description

Cotton, R. W., 1823-1900, The Gates and Walls of Ancient Barnstaple (Un-published). SDV342348.

Site of the Medieval West Gate in Barnstaple removed in 1852. A stone structure of two arches (almost precisely similar to North Gate) which appears to have been blocked up in early 14th century or earlier to form the northwest wall of the Chapel of St Nicholas.

The West or Water Gate adjoined St. Nicholas' Chapel and survived until 1852.

Site visit 13th October 1953. A small plaque reads 'Site of West Gate removed 1852"'. A print shows the gate as one arch occupying only the northern half of Cross Street whilst the southern half is occupied by St Nicholas' Chapel.
Site visit 1st April 1976. No change.
