Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The earthworks do not correspond with any linear features in this location.

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

Two field boundaries aligned north-south visible on circa 1840s tithe map. These field boundaries orrespond with lidar imagery and geophysical survey anomalies.

Environment Agency, 1998-2017, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: South Devon Coast to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX8566 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 31-MAY-2017 (Cartographic). SDV361470.

Linear earthwork ditches are visible.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (AI&M) (Interpretation). SDV361305.

Parallel and linear earthwork ditches, circa 12m wide and northwest to southeast aligned, are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The broad and closely spaced earthworks do not correspond with any linear features shown in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, or on later available historic maps, but are in keeping with the historic field pattern depicted in this location which is characterised as medieval enclosures based on strip fields. The eastern ditch is, however, a likely continuation of a field boundary shown to the north on the Tithe Map. This supports the interpretation that the earthworks are the remains of three possible relict field boundaries of potential medieval date which had largely passed out of use by the mid-19th century.

Smart, C., 2019, Land to the east of Dainton Elms Cross, Ipplepen: Geophysical Survey (Report - Survey). SDV363699.

Geophysical survey recorded three north-south anomlies which relate to former field boundaries also shown on lidar imagery. The middle field boundary does not show on historic mapping, the two outer boundaries are present on circa 1840 tithe map.
