Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (AI&M) (Interpretation). SDV361305.

Parallel earthwork banks, circa 5m wide, are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1969 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The banks are closely spaced and are aligned across the contours of the northeast facing combe slope, occupying an area of approximately 0.5 hectares. The banks coincide with land parcel 869 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map which is recorded as ‘Cuthill Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. An orchard is also shown here on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map of the late 19th century. An orchard in this location supports the interpretation the earthworks were 19th century tree planting banks, the fruit trees having been established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage. The orchard is moderately planted in 1969, although it has been almost completely cleared of trees by 2018.
