Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.

Parallel ridges were visible as earthworks under light tree cover on aerial photographs of 1946. The closely spaced banks are on average 6 metres wide and are aligned north to south and east to west, across the contours of the north-east facing slopes. They are interpreted as banks made to enhance drainage and provide additional depth of soil within an orchard.
The plot in which the banks are visible is depicted as an orchard on the Tithe Map for Combeinteignhead (Plot 326, Cross Park Orchard) and the Ordnance Survey 25-inch first edition map. The banks were therefore probably created prior to circa 1840.
The orchard banks also appear to cross the relict earthworks of former field boundaries, not depicted on the 19th century maps and therefore probably of post-medieval to early 19th century origin, visible as a roughly north to south aligned ditch and west to east aligned bank.
The plot is now largely cleared of trees and the banks remain visible as slight earthworks on images derived from aerial photographs of 2015 and images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
