HER Number:MDV125891
Name:Shrunken settlement at Creacombe, Newton and Noss

Summary

Earthworks interpreted as building platforms and field boundaries associated with a shrunken medieval settlement at Creacombe are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1945 and 1946 and on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. Buildings associated with the settlement had evidently been partly abandoned by the mid-19th century and then more extensively by the late 19th century.

Earthworks of six rectilinear platforms, between 15m to 40m long, and linear banks, circa 5m wide, are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1945 and 1946 and on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, to the west and southwest of Creacombe Farm. The mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map shows that a settlement comprising a number of buildings, with associated land parcel and road, was present here during this time. However, by the late 19th century, these buildings had been demolished, with exception of Creacombe Farm (MDV19392) located to the northeast. The earthwork platforms are therefore interpreted as possible building platforms associated with this possible medieval settlement. Some buildings are shown to correspond with these platforms on the Tithe Map, although evidently a number of buildings of this settlement had already been abandoned by this time.
