HER Number:MDV125911
Name:Hut circle on Shaugh Moor

Summary

A hut circle of probable Bronze Age date is recorded from field investigation and aerial survey as a roughly circular hollow or terrace enclosed by an earthwork bank. It is possibly associated with an irregularly shaped hut circle settlement to the east. The hut circle is identifiable as an earthwork under vegetation on aerial photographs of 1946 and clearly visible on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2016.

A circular bank is visible as an earthwork.

Smith, K., 1980, Typescript notes and plan of Shaugh Moor (Un-published). SDV138646.

A substantial hut lies 12.0 metres west of the enclosure. It is terraced into the north-facing slope and is 6.0 metres in internal diameter with a wall 2.0 metres thick in which internal and external liners are preserved. The entrance is orientated south-west.

Fletcher, M. + Probert, S., 1998, Shaugh Moor, Devon: An Archaeological Survey (Report - Survey). SDV343481.

(Visited 03/12/1997) SX55776343. A substantial hut circle cut into a fairly steep slope. It measures 9.6 metres (north-south) by 9.0 metres with a level interior approximately 5.6 metres across. The front and back scarps are each 1.0 metres high and the walling comprising inner and outer facing slabs and boulders with a boulder/stone core is 0.6 metres high internally and 0.5 metres high externally. The position of the entrance is not clear. A short linear scarp on average 0.4 metres high extends westwards from this hut to create a level area of uncertain function.

Visited 08/09/2019. There is no change to the site description which is acurate. The site is stable with no damage being caused even though the hut circle has a 90% bracken covering. Photo taken

A bank up to circa 2.5m wide is visible as an earthwork under scrub vegetation on aerial photographs of 1946 and clearly visible as a stony earthwork on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2016. The bank encloses a roughly oval hollow or terrace up to circa 5.6m across.
The circular feature is interpreted as the remains of a hut circle of Bronze Age date, possibly associated with an irregularly shaped hut circle settlement approximately 10m to the east (MDV12779).
A narrow break in the southern edge of the bank might be evidence of an entrance.
The banks are identifiable as earthworks on visualisations derived from low resolution lidar data captured in 2013.
