HER Number:MDV125957
Name:Bomb crater north-east of Yeoland Farm, Buckland Monachorum

Summary

A circular earthwork pit is visible on aerial photographs taken from 1946 onwards and on visualisations of lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. It is just to the west of a disused mine shaft depicted on early-20th century maps, but is more likely to be one of several Second World War bomb craters around the bombing decoy at Roborough Down.

A circular earthwork pit, circa 12 metres diameter, is visible on aerial photographs taken from 1946 onwards and on visualisations of lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. A disused mine shaft (MDV28244) is depicted in this field on early-20th century maps, but is sited further from the boundary in an area obscured by tree cover. The earthwork is very clear with sharp edges, indicating that it was reletively recent in 1946, and it is considered more likely to be Second World War bomb crater, one of several around the bombing decoy at Roborough Down (for example MDV55698).
