Full description
Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s First Edition map.

The pits might be associated with a depicted woodland track.

Two oval earthwork pits are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 on the east facing slopes of Fernhill Wood overlooking the combe of the Tony Brook, Shaugh Prior. The pits measure up to 5m wide and 15m long.
The earthworks do not correspond with any pits depicted on the 19th or early 20th century maps available to the survey. They are situated either side of a track first depicted on the Ordnance Survey 2nd Edition 6-inch map, which if interpreted as a direct association might be evidence of a later 19th century date. They are interpreted as possibly extractive pits or prospecting pits of 18th to 19th century date.
