Full description

Environment Agency, 1998-2017, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: South Devon Coast to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX5558 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 31-MAY-2017 (Cartographic). SDV361470.

North-east to south-west aligned banks and ditches are visible as subtle earthworks.

Two roughly north-east to south-west aligned paired banks and ditches are visible as subtle earthworks on digital visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 on the north-west slopes of Bottle Hill.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any linear features depicted on the 19th or early 20th century maps available to the survey and are not in keeping with the character of the surrounding field pattern.
On the basis of the lidar data the earthworks could be interpreted as evidence of possible field boundaries of medieval to post-medieval date that were cleared prior to the mid-19th century.
The earthworks might correspond with linear features identified during a 2014 geophysical survey but were not identified by subsequent trench evaluation. An exception might be a north-south aligned modern ditch that might with the easternmost earthworks identified in Trench 32 (see SDV360929).
It must also be considered possible that the visible earthworks are natural in origin, caused by geological banding.
