An oval mound is visible as an earthwork approximately 90 by 55m in size, on the south-west facing slopes east of Boringdon Park Wood, on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards.
The mound does not correspond with any features shown on the Tithe Map for Plympton St Mary, but does closely match a mound depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map, into the north side of which is shown a rectangular structure marked ‘Shaft’. The shaft is not depicted on the Second Edition map. This supports the interpretation that the mound is of industrial function and probably 19th century origin, but had passed out of use by the early 20th century.
A new structure, probably a farm building, is visible set into the south-east edge of the mound on aerial photographs of 1972. This was not transcribed. The same image possibly shows a roughly circular structure on the north-east edge of the mound. This feature was under scrub vegetation and might therefore be contemporary with the mound.
The central portion of the mound, including the possible contemporary structure, was quarried away on aerial photographs of 1989.
The remaining mound earthwork is largely obscured by tree cover on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2016 but is identifiable as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
