HER Number:MDV126582
Name:Quarry southeast of Choakford Farm, Sparkwell

Summary

An irregularly shaped pit interpreted as a post-medieval or early 19th century quarry which had likely passed out of use by the mid-19th century is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1946. A slight earthwork hollow is visible here on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, suggesting that the pit has been largely levelled.

An irregularly shaped pit, circa 40m long by 30m wide, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1946. The visible earthwork corresponds with land parcel 181 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map which is recorded as ‘Quarry in Quarry Park’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. Earthworks of a pit feature are also shown in this location on both the late 19th century and early 20th century First and Second Edition Ordnance Survey maps. The earthwork is therefore interpreted as a post-medieval or early 19th century quarry which had likely passed out of use by the mid-19th century. The earthwork is not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover. A slight earthwork hollow is visible here on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, suggesting that the pit has been largely levelled.
