Parallel linear banks, circa 4.5 metres wide, are visible as closely spaced earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1946 on the south-east-facing slopes n south of Lower Collard Farm.
The Tithe Map for Shaugh Prior lists Plot 764 as Deer park Orchard, under cultivation as an orchard in the 1840s. The plot is not depicted as an orchard on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of the 1880’s-90’s.
The earthworks are interpreted as banks made for fruit tree planting in an orchard, to improve drainage and enhance depth of soil, probably created from the post-medieval to 19th century and cleared of trees between circa 1840 and 1880.
The banks remain visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2013.
