Name:Possible quarries east of Parkland, Cornwood

Summary

Three large pits or hollows are visible on aerial photographs of the 1960s and visualisations derived from lidar data as earthworks on the south-west facing slopes east of Parkland, Cornwood. Three earthwork hollows are visible.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

Three pits or hollows measuring from 36m to 135m across are visible on aerial photographs of the 1960s on the south-west facing slopes east of Parkland.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pits depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map, and the pits might be the remains of quarries of medieval to post-medieval date that had passed out of use prior to the early 19th century.
However, no reference to quarries is noted in the relevant plots on Tithe Apportionments for Cornwood. The pits roughly follow the 750m contour, which is close to the interface between Dartmoor granite and slate geologies to the south-west, and it is possible that the hollows formed naturally at springheads, several of which are recorded in this area.
