HER Number:MDV127055
Name:Leat within Hele Wood and Marrowpark Plantation, Bickleigh

Summary

A 19th century leat which extends from the northern edge of Marrowpark Plantation to Bickleigh is depicted on mid and late 19th century historic mapping. A short section of this leat at Bickleigh is visible as a narrow earthwork ditch on aerial photographs taken in 1946. The leat had likely passed out of use by the early 20th century and part of it has since been tuned into a trackway.

A narrow curvilinear earthwork ditch, circa 1m wide, is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946. The visible earthwork corresponds with part of a more extensive watercourse shown on both the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map and the late 19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map. The watercourse extends from a stream at the northern edge of Marrowpark Plantation (SX51306373), southwards along the contour of the east facing combe slope where it terminates at Bickleigh (SX52056236), a total length of circa 1.7km. The earthwork is therefore interpreted as the remains of a post-medieval or 19th century leat which had evidently passed out of use by the time of the early 20th century Second Edition Ordnance Map, which only shows part of the watercourse extant within Hele Wood. Visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 show that a sinuous earthwork ditch that corresponds with the course of the leat is visible. It has not, however, been transcribed as the 2019 Ordnance Survey MasterMap also shows that a woodland path is present in this location, suggesting that this former leat has been reused. It is therefore not known to what extent the earthworks of this section of the leat have been modified.
