Extensive spoil mounds, water channels and buildings are visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s as earthwork banks, ditches and structures on the north-facing slopes of Shaugh Moor,
The survey transcription records the mid-20th century form and extent of the Shaugh Lake China Clay Works, prior to the expansion of the later-20th century open cast extraction that resulted in the destructions of much of the historic clayworks.
The visible earthworks include elements of the 19th century clayworks, as depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 5inch map and the expanded early 20th century clayworks as depicted on the Ordnance Survey Second Edition 5inch map. However, further mid-20th century expansion destroyed some of these earlier industrial remains, and the visible earthworks most closely corresponds with that depicted on the 1953-1969 National Grid OS A Imperial map.
The effect of later 20th century expansion of open cast extraction in more completely obliterating the 19th to early-20th century remains had begun to be depicted on the 1963-1996 National Grid OS metric map.
Digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2002 and visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 reveal that much of the historic remains have been destroyed with only the finger dump spoil heaps previously recorded as MDV43391-2 & MDV43393-4 surviving as earthworks.
