Numerous oval and irregularly shaped pits approximately 2m to 8m in diameter are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 distributed over circa 2.7ha of south-west facing hillside belowHawks’ Tor, Shaugh Moor.
The pits are interpreted as the remains of prospecting pits or surface stone quarries, potentially of medieval, post-medieval or later date.
The larger pits were fully transcribed with a sample distribution of the smaller pits schematically transcribed to indicate the pit distribution. The full area of visible earthworks is indicated using an Extent of Feature polygon.
The distribution and extent corresponds to that recorded by Fletcher and Probert (see SDV343481).
