Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map.

The location of the earthworks is obscured from view by dense tree cover.

A roughly triangular platform or terrace and two pits are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 on the north-east facing slopes west of Shaugh Prior village.
The earthworks are not depicted on the Tithe Map for Shaugh Prior, which depicts the plot as part of Shaugh Common, nor are they shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inc map. The location of the earthworks is obscured from view by dense tree cover on aerial photographs of 1946. Beyond stating that they probably predate 1946 it is therefore difficult to construct a likely chronology for the earthworks from the available sources.
It is possible that the pits are simply extractive pits of 19th century date similar to the larger quarry immediately to the south (MDV48992), the mounds resulting from their excavation.
The location of the roughly triangular platform or terrace at the south-west end of the track might also support the interpretation that some of this spoil was used to raise the ground level to ease access to the commons across the stream.
